US, Canada, MLS coaches and players vote on FIFA POTY

Luka Modric (and friends)

Monday brought a bit of a surprise to world soccer fans, as Croatia and Real Madrid midfielder Luka Modric became the first man since 2007 not named Lionel Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo to be named FIFA's Player of the Year. After former Orlando City SC standout Kaká won what was then known as the "World Football Player of the Year Award," and then the "Ballon d'Or," Messi and Ronaldo traded honors over a decade of dominance before Modric broke through.
