Report: Toronto FC may turn to Italian striker Marco Borriello for summer

Toronto FC have built a fearsome attack, headlined by Sebastian Giovinco and Jozy Altidore.

But if both players depart temporarily for international tournaments this summer, as expected, how will TFC cope? It appears the club is lining up a backup plan in the form of Italian striker Marco Borriello.

That's the word from FutbolMLS.com, as a report on Wednesday says the itinerant forward is being looked at by TFC to soften the projected blows of losing Altidore to the US national team for the Copa AmƩrica Centenario and of losing Giovinco for the Italian national team for the European Championship.

Borriello, 33, currently plays in Serie A for Atalanta and scouts for TFC and the New York Red Bulls were reportedly recently in attendance to watch him play.

He is a former Italian international, and has spent all of his career, except for a loan stint with English team West Ham United in 2014, in Italy. Although he and Giovinco have both played for Juventus and Empoli in their respective careers, they have not previously been club teammates.
