World Cup: Construction worker dies in accident at Arena da Amazonia in Manaus

Arena Amazonia, World Cup 2014

More tragic news came out of Brazil on Friday, as yet another construction worker was involved in an accident that claimed his life.

Antônio José Pita Martins, 55, was dismantling a crane that was used to put up the roof at Arena da Amazônia in Manaus when the accident occured on Friday morning. He was alive as he was rushed to a nearby hospital, but later died after sustaining multiple injuries at the site of one of this summer's World Cup venues.

FIFA Secretary General Jérôme Valcke expressed the federation's condolences via Twitter:

Martins is the third person whose death has been linked with the stadium construction of Arena da Amazônia and fifth overall as Brazil attempts to finish building all of its stadiums ahead of the World Cup in June. Last November, a crane collapsed onto the roof at Arena de São Paulo, killing two workers.

The Arena da Amazônia will host the US national team's second group stage match, against Portugal on June 22, in addition to three other group contests.
