The superlatives rolled off Victor Vazquez’s tongue, like his pinpoint passes during his productive two years with Toronto FC.
In a wide-ranging interview on the Footy Talks podcast, the Spanish midfielder couldn’t speak highly enough about his time in Toronto, calling the 2017 treble-winning season the best of his career.
Vazquez, who came up through the famed La Masia system with the likes of Cesc Fabregas, Lionel Messi and Gerard Pique, said that team, under the direction of coach Greg Vanney and with interchangeable parts throughout the team, were close to playing in the “Barca way.”
“Because of the players we had, because of the system we were playing, because we could change the system because Greg thought that maybe working 4-3-3 was better than 3-5-2,” said Vazquez, who is playing for Umm Salal SC in Qatar.
Vazquez’s biggest compliments were left for Vanney, who he compared to Pep Guardiola.
“His vision and his intelligence, it’s amazing. Also, the face to face with me always was the best coach I ever had, honestly. After Guardiola, it’s Greg Vanney,” Vazquez said. “With Guardiola, I had a special feeling, of course. The next one is Greg because we always could talk about everything. We still talk about the team sometimes because he knows I’m watching many games from TFC.”
