After a more than nine-month layoff, the US men's national team return to action to meet Gareth Bale and Wales at Liberty Stadium in Swansea on Thursday. It is the first match for Gregg Berhalter's squad since a 1-0 win over Costa Rica in an international friendly on Feb. 1 at Dignity Health Sports Park.

With the November FIFA window coming between the end of the MLS regular season and the start of the Audi 2020 MLS Cup Playoffs, Berhalter has called in an almost-exclusive European-based squad with Sebastian Lletget and Brazil-based midfielder Johnny Cardoso the only exceptions. The LA Galaxy midfielder replaces Josh Sargent, who wasn't released by Werder Bremen.

The team will be without Christian Pulisic for their international friendlies against Wales and Panama on Monday, with the Chelsea midfielder having returned to his club to continue rehab.

“Christian is a big part of our group,” Berhalter said Wednesday “He has been working through an injury, but it really says a lot that he wanted to come into camp, be around the guys and continue to be a leader with this team.”

Juventus midfielder Weston McKennie, RB Leipzig midfielder Tyler Adams, Borussia Dortmund's Gio Reyna, Barcelona fullback Sergino Dest and Tim Weah from Lille are the standouts of a 24-man roster. Of those players, 14 are 20 years old or younger, includes 10 players seeking their first USMNT cap. Chief among them are Reyna, who came through the New York City FC academy, Valencia midfielder Yunus Musah and Richie Ledezma.

The USMNT remain in Europe during the window and will face Panama in Austria on Nov. 16.

Bale, the Tottenham Hotspur star, captains the squad, ranked No. 20 in the world in the latest FIFA rankings, two spots above the USMNT.

This is only the second meeting with the USMNT winning 2-0 at Spartan Stadium on May 26, 2003, at Spartan Stadium on goals by Landon Donovan and Eddie Lewis. Nick Rimando earned the clean sheet in his first start and striker Brian Ching debuted.
