Troy Perkins named Player of the Month

NEW YORK (August 31, 2007) - D.C. United goalkeeper Troy Perkins was named MLS Player of the Month for August after helping lead United to a perfect 5-0-0 record during the month.

Perkins, the fourth-year goalkeeper and last year's MLS Goalkeeper of the Year, recorded five wins, 16 saves and a miniscule 0.20 goals against average during the month. He began the month with a 7-5-3 record, 1.33 goals against average and had recorded two shutouts during United's first 15 games. Perkins' record now stands at 12-5-3 with a 1.05 goals against average and six shutouts. He allowed only a penalty kick goal versus the New York Red Bulls on Aug. 22 in a 3-1 victory.

United began August in fifth place in the Eastern Conference standings, but ended the month alone in second place only three points behind League leaders the New England Revolution. Perkins helped lead his club to victories over the Los Angeles Galaxy (1-0) and four Eastern Conference foes - Columbus Crew (2-0), New England Revolution (3-0), New York Red Bulls (3-1) and Toronto FC (1-0).

This is Perkins first career MLS Player of the Month award. He will lead D.C. United on Saturday, Sept. 1 when they face FC Dallas on the road at Pizza Hut Park in Frisco, Tex. at 8:30 p.m. ET.
