Schedule released for 2016 Amway Canadian Championship

Canadian Championship celebration - Vancouver Whitecaps - 2015

The road to the 2016 Amway Canadian Championship is set.

Five teams will participate in the latest edition of Canada's national cup competition, with Canada Soccer releasing the schedule for the tournament on Friday. All three MLS teams will enter in the semifinal stage, with NASL sides FC Edmonton and Ottawa Fury facing off in the preliminary round for the opportunity to reach the final four.

The preliminary round will be a home-and-away series held on May 11 and May 18, and the winner of that tie will take on current cup-holders Vancouver Whitecaps, beginning on June 1, followed by the return leg on June 8. The other side of the bracket will see 401 Derby rivals Montreal Impact and Toronto FC square off for a shot at the final.

The two-leg final is scheduled for the week of June 20 and the week of June 27. The winner of the competition also books a place in the 2017-18 CONCACAF Champions League.

Vancouver won their first Canadian Championship in 2015. Montreal holds nine titles and Toronto four in the all-time rankings.
