Report: El Tri boss Miguel Herrera says April USMNT-Mexico friendly sans European stars in the works

Miguel Herrera reflecting, Mexico

It wouldn't be a calendar year without a United States-Mexico clash, and fans of both sides may get their annual dose of the region's top rivalry next April.

As reported by Medio Tiempo, El Tri boss Miguel Herrera told Mexican media that an April friendly between the two teams was being discussed, a date that would fall outside FIFA's international dates with rosters geared around domestic players. The two nations drew 2-2 on April 2 in Glendale, Arizona, in a similar match.

Despite Herrera's comments, there has been no official word from US Soccer.

Apart from World Cup years in 2006 and 2010, the USMNT has played Mexico at least once every year since 1993. El Tri lead the all-time series 33-18-14, but haven't defeated the US since the 2011 Gold Cup final.

The US take on Ireland on Tuesday following a 2-1 defeat to Colombia in London, while Mexico follow up a 3-2 victory against the Netherlands highlighted by a pair of Carlos Vela goals with a match in Belarus.
