SALT LAKE CITY - Real Salt Lake General Manager Steve Pastorino and Head Coach John Ellinger continue to retool for the 2006 season with the announcement today that the team has acquired Costa Rican DF Daniel Torres. The 28-year-old will hold one of RSL's senior international slots for the 2006 campaign.
"Daniel Torres impressed us greatly during his trial in October. He was a very solid defender in this league in 2002 and 2003, and has since improved his game playing in Europe," Pastorino said. "We expect him to be an immediate contributor to our defense."</p>
Prior to signing with RSL, Torres divided the 2005 season with Tromsø IL of the Norwegian Premier League before transferring to Bodens BK of the Swedish Superettan. He also spent the 2003-2004 season with Club Deportiva Saprissa in the Costa Rican League, the team which he started his professional career in 1996.</p>
Torres' last season in Major League Soccer was with the Columbus Crew in 2003 where he saw action in eight games with six starts. During the 2002 season, Torres appeared in 25 games for the Crew, 23 of them starts and he added his first career MLS point, a game-winning assist in June 12 against New England. Torres also appeared in three matches, two of them starts, in the Crew's run to the U.S. Open Cup title.</p>
The Moravia, Costa Rican native signed with the Crew on Sept. 8, 2001, just one day before the final game of the regular season. He made his debut for Columbus playing the final 18 minutes in game two of the quarterfinal series against the San Jose Earthquakes on Sept. 26, 2001. </p>
