Many would have said it was over. But after going down 3-1 in the second half, the US national team walked away from Amsterdam Arena with a 4-3 win.
In their first ever win against the Netherlands, the US score three players score their first international goals including Bobby Wood, who provided the winner in the 90th minute.
In what was a wide-open game between the two sides that saw each team put 11 shots on target, Jurgen Klinsmann's side got their second straight win heading into their matchup with Germany on Wednesday (2:45 pm ET, FOX Sports 1/UniMás/UDN).
WOOD THE HERO: Many people question Bobby Wood's continued inclusion in the US national team's roster. He took a step towards proving those doubters wrong on Friday. He came on in the 65th minute and aggressively attacked the Dutch backline, creating chances for Jurgen Klinsmann's side. In the 90th minute he put the icing on the cake of the USMNT's comeback. Michael Bradley streaked into the open field and found an open Jordan Morris in the right channel. The Stanford product cut the ball back to to Wood at the edge of the six-yard box, who finished past a diving Jasper Cillessen to give the US the 4-3 lead heading into stoppage time.
WILLIAMS EQUALIZES: Danny Williams was out of the national team picture for almost two years before appearing in USA's draw against Switzerland. He returned to action in the 63rd minute, replacing Kyle Beckerman, in his usual defensive midfield position. Down one goal in the 89th minute, the US sent in a corner that was poorly cleared to Williams just outside the 18. The Reading man took a touch to open up some space and lashed one on frame. Thanks to a deflection, it ended up in the back of the net, leveling the score and giving Williams his first international goal.
FALLING APART: The second half did not start well for the US. Klaas-Jan Huntelaar scored his second of the game when Gregory van der Wiel sent in another accurate cross that found a streaking Huntelaar. The Schalke man headed it in the direction of Brad Guzan but it was too much for the goalkeeper and the Dutch took the 2-1 lead. Just four minutes later, Huntelaar got a hold of a ball and sent it streaking on frame. It deflected off an unaware Memphis Depay and ended up in the back of the net to give the Dutch a two-goal advantage.
BROOKS LIKES JUNE: It's been 355 days since John Brooks scored his first international goal. That one, as many USMNT fans will know, came in the opening game of the World Cup against Ghana when Brooks' header won the game for Jurgen Klinsmann's squad. On Friday, he scored his second international goal to bring USA back in the game. The Hertha Berlin defender made a crunching tackle in the midfield and proceeded to make his way down the field. Eventually Bradley found a streaking DeAndre Yedlin with a beautiful through ball. Yedlin squared to Brooks, who was standing alone in front of net. The 6-foot-4 center back smoothly put it past Cillessen to bring the US within one goal with 20 minutes to go.
THE HUNTER OPENS THE SCORING: Klaas-Jan Huntelaar has always lived somewhat in the shadows but The Hunter has now scored over 40 international goals in his career after his brace on Friday. He hit the landmark on his first, which came in the 22nd minute when Memphis Depay opened some space for himself on the wing against a backpedaling Gyasi Zardes. His cross was on point and Huntelaar put it away with ease.
ZARDES BOUNCES BACK: The LA Galaxy forward did not let that play get him down. Six minutes after Huntelaar's first goal, Zardes scored his first international goal for the US national team. Fabian Johnson sent in a teasing ball to the far post that found an on-rushing Zardes. The 24-year-old hit the ball with the outside of his foot on a half-volley that deflected off Cillessen and in.
