MLS Fantasy: Under-the-radar players highlight top picks for Round 30

Fantasy: Yordy Reyna - Vancouver Whitecaps

I find it oddly comforting that the unexpected keeps happening even as the 2017 MLS regular season begins to wind down. In Round 29, top-ranked Toronto dropped six points, NYCFC had to find a temporary home, D.C. United’sPatrick Mullins bagged 4 goals and Diego Valeri continued his scoring streak.

Many MLS Fantasy managers also pushed for the 200-point mark, but everyone fell short. The player who came the closest was Eric M, manager of Mayhem SC, who scored an impressive 174 points.

This week is likely your last chance to take a real run at racking up 200 points. Round 30 is our last Double Game Week of the year, and a whopping 16 teams are playing twice! Injury concerns, yellow card warnings, and pre-playoff rotations are sure to play a big part this week. If you’re looking for some of the best DGW players, be sure to check out MLS Fantasy expert Travis Luscombe’s latest article.

If you need to earn some big points to help separate you from the pack and are done playing it safe, check out my list of some of my favorite boom or bust and switcheroo players.

Goalkeeper

Favorable Split: If you’re a player who likes to look at matchups over stats, then consider New England’s Cody Cropper ($4.0). The Revs start the week on Wednesday against an Orlando (7:30 pm ET; MLS LIVE) team missing two key defenders due to red cards and then come back home Saturday to face an Atlanta (7:30 pm ET; MLS LIVE) team that will be without their key playmaker. Both situations could shake things up enough to give Cropper a chance to earn a clean sheet in either game.

Defenders

Money Drop: Finding a productive out of position player can result in a gold mine of fantasy points, and that is especially true when an offensive player is eligible for defensive clean sheets. This does not happen often, but Orlando’s Yoshimar Yotun ($8.1) is such a player. He’s a midfielder who has already racked up one assist and a slew of cross and key pass bonus points in limited time in MLS. His high price may scare some off as a defender, but he’s a great switcheroo option due to Orlando’s early second game on Saturday against Dallas (4:00 pm ET; Univision, Facebook.com, MLS LIVE).

Midfielders

Hot Streak: They don’t get a ton of attention, but Vancouver and Yordy Reyna ($8.9) have been firing on all cylinders over the last couple of months. Over his past four games, Reyna has scored three goals, earned three assists and helped the Whitecaps to move to the top of the Western Conference. All of this success has been at home, so the streak may stop this week as the Whitecaps travel to Seattle on Wednesday (10:30 pm ET; TSN 1 in Canada, MLS LIVE in the US) and to Sporting Kansas City on Saturday (9:00 pm ET; TSN in Canada, MLS LIVE in the US).

Forwards

Impulse Pickup: If you’re looking for the ultimate bargain player to roll the dice on, consider Colorado’s Dominique Badji ($6.3). The Rapids are out of the playoff picture, but nobody seems to have told Badji – the striker has scored in each of his last three games. I honestly think he has a chance for more as Colorado starts its week on Wednesday against an ailing Dallas (8:00 pm ET; MLS LIVE) defense, and then finishes back at home hosting a Montreal (9:00 pm ET; TVAS in Canada, MLS LIVE in the US) team that has allowed 30 goals in 15 away games.
