Mixed results for MLSers in international play

Rafa Marquez gets 100th cap with the Mexican national team

It was a mixed bag of results for MLS players in international action this weekend.

In one of Saturday's more high-profile friendlies, New York Red Bulls defender Rafa Márquez picked up his 100th cap for Mexico, leading El Tri to a 3-1 win over Paraguay in Oakland, Calif. Márquez tallied an assist on the second Mexican goal.

Fellow Red Bull, Jamaica's Dane Richards, was on the wrong end of a 2-0 result against Venezuela in Kingston. Joining Richards on that Jamaica team were Colorado's Omar Cummings, San Jose's Khari Stephenson, Houston's Jermaine Taylor and Sporting Kansas City's Shavar Thomas. Alejandro Moreno of Chivas USA played for Venezuela and scored the second goal, the fourth of his international career.

Moreno's Chivas USA teammate Andy Boyens also got on the board, but unfortunately for the big New Zealand defender, it was his own net into which he put the ball. The Kiwis fought back, though, and ended up earning a 1-1 draw with China on Friday.

Joining them on the score sheet was Real Salt Lake's Alvaro Saborio, who opened the scoring in Costa Rica's 2-2 draw with China on Sunday. That game saw the Ticos concede a late equalizer. Both Leo Gonzalez of Seattle and Roy Miller of New York stayed with their clubs instead of joining the Ticos.

In African Cup of Nations qualifiers, Bouna Coundoul's Senegal remained at the top of their group with a 1-0 win behind a goal from Demba Ba. Meanwhile, Kei Kamara's Sierra Leone fell further off the pace in Group G with a 3-1 loss to Niger.
