Kick Off: Donovan's Seattle stinger, Najar undecided

Landon Donovan says that Steve Zakuani and the Sounders are probably less thrilled about having had to face LA

LA Galaxy midfielder Landon Donovan did not forget that Seattle’s Steve Zakuani said the Sounders wanted a piece of the Supporters’ Shield winners in the first round of the playoffs.

After Sunday’s 2-1 win at the Home Depot Center which ensured the Galaxy’s advancement from the aggregate-goal series, Donovan wonders how the Sounders feel about the match-up now.

Donovan also had words for teammate David Beckham, saying he is playing his best soccer since arriving in LA. Saturday Night Live is also taking notice and has reportedly offered the Englishman the opportunity to be a guest host.

Seattle manager Sigi Schmid admits that some of his players were intimidated by Sunday’s second leg in LA but also was very outspoken about the Galaxy’s first goal off a Beckham corner kick. Schmid contends it should have been taken from the opposite side of the field and that LA would not have scored.

Beckham is not backing down from the controversy and says that he was only following the referee’s instructions.

Seattle has bigger fish to fry than a corner kick goal. For starters, there are questions whether Steve Zakuani and Fredy Montero will be back for 2011.

Turns out only one first-round playoff series needed extra time and PKs. In Columbus, they are campaigning for PK shootouts to be done away with after the Crew were eliminated on Saturday. One writer wants to see the matches continue until the players drop.

The story finally emerges of how Martin Vasquez went from being confirmed for 2011 to receiving a pink slip just days later. It stemmed from a disagreement over the firing a member of the technical staff.

There seems to be a bit of controversy brewing around Kansas City Wizards Designated Player Omar Bravo in Mexico. In response to reports that Bravo would prefer to stay with Mexican side Chivas de Guadalajara, owner Jorge Vergara says that Bravo sold himself and he can’t “rescue him” again.

Another player seemingly on his way to MLS is US goalkeeper Marcus Hahnemann, who was responsible for giving up a late winner to Manchester United on Saturday. He says a return to MLS may be in the cards and that Seattle is on his mind.

Decisions, decisions. MLS Rookie of the Year Andy Najar is grilled once again by the Honduran media about his refusal to join the Catrachos national team for a Nov. 17 match. The DC phenom asks his countrymen to be patient, that he has not made a decision.

The USA is just a few weeks away from learning whether it will host the 2022 World Cup. According to FIFA president Sepp Blatter, one of the Americans’ competitors for the event, South Korea, has a “very good bid” which has the potential to unite the two Koreas.

Finally, New York Red Bulls star Thierry Henry and his ex-teammate from the French national team, Bixente Lizarazu, will probably not be inviting one another over for dinner after the ex-left back calls Titi “paranoid.”
