Americans Herculez Gomez and José Francisco Torres started for Pachuca as the Mexican side salvaged some pride on Wednesday and clinched fifth place at the FIFA Club World Cup following a penalty-kick shootout win over local club Al-Wahda in Abu Dhabi.
Down 2-0, the reigning CONCACAF Champions League holders missed a 73rd-minute penalty kick and needed two late goals from DarÃo Cvitanich to equalize the match against 10-man Al-Wahda, sending the game into a shootout after 90 minutes of regulation.
Gomez started the match in place of Cvitanich, who was in the starting XI in the quarterfinal loss to Congolese side TP Mazembe. The former MLS player was active early on and was eventually subbed off after 62 minutes.
Torres played the full 90 minutes but did not participate in the PK shootout, which Pachuca won 4-2 after Al-Wahda failed to convert on their final two kicks.
