Epic comeback eradicates Espanyol

Numancia grabbed a dramatic late winner to complete an epic comeback against Espanyol at Montjuic.

Txomin Nagore put the promoted side in front somewhat against the run of play after a quarter of an hour, but Espanyol equalized through Moises Hurtado 10 minutes before the break.

Basque striker Asier Goiria then restored the visitors' advantage seven minutes after the interval, but Dani Jarque headed home from a corner to level the scores once again.

Raul Tamudo grabbed a third from the penalty spot after 71 minutes to put Espanyol ahead for the first time but Numancia failed to give in and equalized through Jose Javier Barkero in the closing stages.

It seemed as if the game would end in a draw, but Carlos Bellvis grabbed the winner in the fourth minute of injury-time to complete a remarkable turnaround for Sergio Kresic's side.

Espanyol usually struggle to break down rival teams at Montjuic, but almost scored after just five minutes.

Luis Garcia found himself one-on-one with Juan Pablo Colinas following a quick counter-attack, but the Numancia goalkeeper stood tall to deny the Espanyol forward.

At the other end, Barkero tried his luck from distance two minutes later and almost caught Carlos Kameni by surprise, but the Espanyol keeper did just enough to keep the ball out.

A minute later, Nene found himself through on goal, but Juan Pablo again kept his side on level terms with a smart save.

A goal appeared imminent and it soon arrived, when Nagore pounced to fire home after Espanyol had failed to clear a free-kick with 14 minutes on the clock.

Nene almost equalized after 22 minutes, but saw his effort sail just wide of the target.

Tamudo then got behind the visitors' defense after 31 minutes, but Sergio Boris hacked the ball behind for a corner.

Espanyol were getting closer, though, and duly equalised four minutes later, when Moises pounced on a loose ball in the area and slotted past Juan Pablo from close-range.

The teams went in on level terms at the break, but Goiria restored Numancia's advantage after 52 minutes, when he rose to head Juan Quero's cross past a helpless Kameni.

Jarque then equalised for Espanyol as he headed Nene's corner past Juan Pablo after 63 minutes.

The game was there for the taking and Espanyol looked the more likely winners as Tamudo won a penalty after 71 minutes and beat Juan Pablo to give the home side the lead.

The decision appeared dubious, but Tamudo - who had missed his last two spot-kicks - made no mistake this time.

Nene missed a great chance to put Espanyol 4-2 up with 10 minutes left as he blasted wildly over the bar.

And he was left to rue his miss four minutes later as Barkero lashed a left-footed drive past Kameni from the edge of the area.

Espanyol threw men forward in search of a winner, but paid the price when Bellvis finished off a counter-attack to hand Numancia an unlikely victory.

It was harsh on Espanyol, who now drop to 16th.

Numancia move clear of the bottom three and will stay above the relegation zone whatever happens later on Sunday, when bottom two Athletic Bilbao and Osasuna play each other and 18th-placed Recreativo Huelva host leaders Barcelona.
