Canadian Exports: Julian de Guzman joining Skoda Xanthi of Greek Super League

Former Toronto FC and FC Dallas midfielder Julian de Guzman has joined Skoda Xanthi FC, the Greek Super League club announced on its website on Monday.

With the move, de Guzman will move to a fifth country after playing in Germany, Spain, Canada and the United States. The Canadian national team veteran was most recently with SSV Jahn Regensburg in Germany’s 2.Bundesliga.

De Guzman had joined Regensburg right at the deadline of the January transfer window and became a free agent when the team was relegated.

The move is something of a surprise since de Guzman told MLSsoccer.com just before Canada’s Gold Cup campaign that he was working on a deal with Wisla Krakow in Poland and potentially rejoining former Regensburg head coach Franciszek Smuda.

Xanthi finished seventh in the Super League last season and have a Europa League second qualifying-round game against Northern Irish club Linfield on Thursday. Linfield won the first leg 1-0.

Terms of the deal were not disclosed and it’s unknown whether de Guzman will be available for Thursday’s game. The Super League season starts next month.
