Brian Schmetzer: "It'd be awesome" if Sounders clinch Cup berth at home

Brian Schmetzer and the Seattle Sounders did plenty of celebrating last fall.

They just didn’t get to do much of it at home.

They’ll have a chance to change that on Thursday, when the defending MLS Cup champions will look to clinch their second-straight title game appearance in Leg 2 of the Western Conference Championship against the Houston Dynamo at CenturyLink Field (10:30 pm ET; ESPN in the US | TSN1, TVAS2 in Canada).

The Sounders, who clinched the Western Conference title in Colorado last year before winning MLS Cup at Toronto, lead the Dynamo 2-0 heading into Thursday’s second leg. Schmetzer spoke on Friday about the opportunity to clinch the West in front of a huge crowd at CenturyLink Field.

“It’d be awesome, it’d be really awesome,” said the second-year head coach (watch above). “The people that traveled to Denver last year, certainly they made the energy in that building good, the reception we got at home at Boeing Field [airport] was great, so we’re happy that we have an opportunity to do it here at home.”
