Former New York Red Bulls manager Jesse Marsch has been named the Austrian Bundesliga coach of the year for the 2019-2020 season after guiding Red Bull Salzburg to a domestic double and becoming the first American coach to win a single or multiple European trophies.
Marsch's charges steamrolled down the stretch, taking 26 out of 30 possible points from the 10-match championship round to finish 12 points clear in the standings. That followed a 5-0 demolition of second division Austria Lustenau in late May in the Cup final, the club's first game back in action following a break of two-and-a-half months due to the Coronavirus pandemic.
Before the break, Salzburg finished third in a difficult UEFA Champions League group that included Liverpool and Napoli, and earned a parachute place in the Europa League's round of 32, where thely lost 6-3 on aggregate to Eintracht Frankfurt.
Marsch was in his first season in charge in Salzburg, after spending a year as an assistant at the parent club of the Red Bull football family, RB Leipzig in Germany's Bundesliga.
