Before the break, Salzburg finished third in a difficult UEFA Champions League group that included Liverpool and Napoli, and earned a parachute place in the Europa League's round of 32, where thely lost 6-3 on aggregate to Eintracht Frankfurt.

Marsch was in his first season in charge in Salzburg, after spending a year as an assistant at the parent club of the Red Bull football family, RB Leipzig in Germany's Bundesliga.
