Rumor: Canada's Eustaquio transfer listed -- could he land with Montreal Impact?

According to a couple reports, Canadian holding midfielder Stephen Eustaquio could be in line for a move to MLS and possibly the Montreal Impact.

After a promising tenure at Portuguese Primeira Liga side Chaves, the Canadian-born Eustaquio moved to Mexico giants Cruz Azul a year ago, only to sustain a major injury. He hasn't appeared in a first-team game since, though he did appear for the club's U-20 side as he worked back to full fitness, scoring twice.

Now he's on the transfer block, according to Mexican outlet And Montreal-based journalist Sofiane Benzaza believes there are clues the Impact are interested, though there don't appear to be any confirmed reports.

Eustaquio has appeared for Portugal at the youth level, but then committed to the Canada national team and manager John Herdman as part of their Concacaf Nations League efforts this past fall. He was officially capped in November, appearing as a substitute in Canada's 4-1 loss to the United States in Orlando (pictured above, left).

While Eustaquio was born in Ontario to Portuguese parents, his family returned to his parents' homeland when he was a boy, and he developed in the Portuguese pyramid, eventually earning an opportunity with Chaves.

Cruz Azul's former Portuguese manager Pedro Caixinha brought in Eustaquio last January. But Caixinha and Cruz Azul mutually parted ways in September, before the player had recovered from his injury.
