Timbers, Loons break MLS record by combining for 49 shots, no goals

There were no goals between the Portland Timbers and Minnesota United on Sunday, but it wasn't for a lack of chances.

The Timbers and Loons combined for a whopping 49 shots in the match, with none of them finding the net. That's the most shots ever taken in a MLS match with neither team finding the back of the net. That total is tied for the third most in MLS history.

Many of the shots weren't very substantive, with the Timbers putting 11 of their 29 on target and the Loons putting just four of their 20 on frame. Still, two clubs combining for a shot barrage that almost hit the half-century mark and not seeing any find the net is a remarkable stat.

For the Timbers, it was a particularly maddening result, as Portland have now failed to score in three straight games and gone 0-2-1 on their home pitch over that stretch. The Loons may have been fortunate to escape Providence Park with the draw, but in the end it's a valuable road point as they temporarily climbed within a single point of the Seattle Sounders for the No. 2 spot in the Western Conference.
