Philadelphia Union 1, Colorado Rapids 1 | 2019 MLS Match Recap

The Colorado Rapids' two-game winning run was snapped, but they continued their unbeaten streak following a 1-1 draw on the road against the Philadelphia Union on Wednesday.

The game's start was delayed 57 minutes due to lightning strikes around Talen Energy Stadium, but once they got underway the Union, making just two changes on the night to the Rapids' six, dominated the run of play but couldn't score more than one goal on the night.

The Union took the lead in the 26th minute, as Sergio Santos made a beautiful flick on a throughball that fell to teammate Jamiro Monteiro, who sent it back up to Santos to finish the chance.

While Philadelphia had chances to extend their lead, Colorado showed their resilience, as substitute Jonathan Lewis scored a volley off Andre Shinyashiki's cross in the 72nd minute to tie up the match.

Three Things

  • THE BIG PICTURE: Given the midweek nature and recent results, both teams will likely be at least partially satisfied with a draw. The Rapids look increasingly like they are turning the page on a brutal start to the season, while the Union will lament giving up a lead at home to drop two points on the night, especially since they could have taken first place in the East again with a win.
  • MOMENT OF THE MATCH: Lewis' equalizer was both an impressive finish and the turning point in the match.
  • MAN OF THE MATCH: With the Union controlling the run of play, Colorado goalkeeper Clint Irwin was put under pressure, and he delivered in his first start of the season, making five saves to keep his team in the game.
