Minnesota United announced the signing of MLS veteran Lawrence Olum on Friday, adding a dose of versatility, experience and depth to the Loons’ roster.

The Kenyan international arrives in the Twin Cities after two years with the Portland Timbers, where he also played time during their time in the lower divisions before joining MLS. Previously he logged five seasons with Sporting Kansas City, making 87 appearances across league and postseason play dating back to 2011.

“It’s a nice story to have another player that’s worked with Adrian for many years, as well as played in this market for us years ago,” said MNUFC sporting director Manny Lagos in a statement. “He adds a lot of good depth and a veteran leadership to the middle of the field.”

Olum, 34, is capable of playing both defensive midfield and center back and has also played for the Minnesota Thunder, Austin Aztex and Orlando City in the lower divisions, and has four caps with the Kenya national team.
