Reports: Mix Diskerud, Jack McInerney training with IFK Goteborg

TRANSFER TRACKER STATUS: Trial

After signing with Manchester City during the January transfer window, Mix Diskerud is apparently headed back to IFK Goteborg, the Swedish club where he spent last season, and he’s bringing one of his countrymen.

MLS veteran Jack McInerney has joined Goteborg’s preseason training camp in Spain on a trial basis, the club revealed on their website on Sunday, and will be evaluated as a potential signing for the Blåvitt (“Blue-and-white”).

“Jack McInerney will work with us all week until Saturday. Then we'll see what's happening,” sporting director Mats Gren told IFKGoteborg.se.

A former US youth international with a solid goalscoring track record that went cold amid limited minutes with the LA Galaxy last year, McInerney, 25, has scored 43 goals and six assists in 175 career MLS regular-season appearances with Philadelphia, Montreal, Columbus, Portland and LA.

Gren told Swedish outlet GP that his club had run the rule over McInerney a year ago, but did not seriously pursue a transfer with his rights still belonging to LA at that time.

“But in the end, it would be a deal with the Galaxy and then we did not really know where it was going to land, so we left. But now his contract has expired,” said Gren. “He has wanted to come to Europe but did not get any other club [during Europe’s main winter transfer window] and is a free transfer. He’s a dynamic and interesting striker, a goalscorer.”

Like MLS, Sweden’s Allsvenskan runs on a spring-to-fall schedule; thus Goteborg’s season has not yet begun, and their window for incoming players remains open.

Though he’s technically on Man City’s books, Diskerud is not in the English Premier League giants’ plans at this time and is expected to be loaned out to another destination in the days ahead. The former New York City FC midfielder scored five goals in 29 matches on loan at Goteborg last year.
