Report: Merritt Paulson "hopeful" for Timbers to sign two players next week

Merritt Paulson -- Shades -- 2017

With Giovanni Savarese installed as the Portland Timbers' next coach, club owner Merritt Paulson suggested Saturday on Twitter that new additions will be coming very shortly.

It's been a stunning offseason for Portland. First coach Caleb Porter departed suddenly. Then Atlanta United swooped in to nab club icon Darlington Nagbe in what could end up a record-setting trade.

Portland also jettisoned striker Darren Mattocks to D.C. United for an international roster slot.

Now with Savarese's arrival, there's considerable anticipation as to how the Timbers will go about using the allocation money received for Nagbe, as well as the extra place for an international player.

If Paulson's hopes come to fruition, Timbers fans could be in for a belated Christmas present or two.
