MLS Power Rankings, Week 10: Colorado Rapids climb all the way to No. 2

BIGGEST MOVERS: Colorado +4 spots | Sporting KC -6 spots

1

LAST WEEK: 2

HIGH: 1 | LOW: 6

Survived the road, now get a chance to thrive at home. The Reds should continue to rise throughout the year with 16 of their final 25 at the newly renovated (and very loud) BMO Field.

Latest result: Won vs. FC Dallas, 1-0

Next MLS match: Saturday vs. Vancouver

2

LAST WEEK: 6

HIGH: 2 | LOW: 20

A huge jump for the top team in the Supporters' Shield standings... and yes, that means the Power Rankings Politburo is finally on board. The Rapids just keep finding a way to get it done.

Latest result: Won vs. Real Salt Lake, 1-0

Next MLS match: Wednesday vs Sporting KC

3

LAST WEEK: 3

HIGH: 3 | LOW: 9

Another barrage of goals, but some reason to worry defensively over the final 30 minutes, and some questions still linger about how Robbie Keane and Giovani Dos Santos fit.

Latest result: Won vs New England, 4-2

Next MLS match: Wednesday at Philadelphia

4

LAST WEEK: 4

HIGH: 4 | LOW: 19

A potential six-point week presents a huge test for the team that leads the Eastern Conference in points per game. The Union have shown better than expected depth thus far, which will help.

Latest result: Bye week

Next MLS match: Wednesday vs. LA Galaxy

5

LAST WEEK: 1

HIGH: 1 | LOW: 15

Tested Zac MacMath by putting six shots on target, but weren't as dangerous as they could have been and got punished for the one time they took a nap. So it goes.

Latest result: Lost at Colorado, 1-0

Next MLS match: Saturday at Houston

6

LAST WEEK: 7

HIGH: 1 | LOW: 7

The talk following Saturday night's drama was about the dysfunctional Crew SC locker room, which is fine. But let's not overlook the fact that the Impact went on the road and stole a precious point against a conference foe.

Latest result: Drew at Columbus, 4-4

Next MLS match: Saturday vs. Philadelphia

7

LAST WEEK: 5

HIGH: 1 | LOW: 7

The lack of a Blas Perez replacement is starting to tell. Dallas never have an easy outlet, and even a team with this much skill occasionally needs someone they can hoof the ball toward.

Latest result: Lost at Toronto FC, 1-0

Next MLS match: Wednesday vs Portland

8

LAST WEEK: 9

HIGH: 1 | LOW: 10

Continued their string of never repeating a result in 2016, while breaking a string of good results up at BC Place. The final scoreline wasn't what they wanted, of course, but the overall performance was mostly encouraging.

Latest result: Lost at Vancouver, 2-1

Next MLS match: Wednesday at FC Dallas

9

LAST WEEK: 11

HIGH: 7 | LOW: 19

Finally got a road point on their fifth try, and probably could have had all three if the finishing had been a little bit better. RBNY aren't entirely "back," but they're getting closer.

Latest result: Drew at Orlando, 1-1

Next MLS match: Friday at D.C. United (UniMás)

10

LAST WEEK: 13

HIGH: 10 | LOW: 17

Four goals in four games for Mr. Morris, who looks a lot more comfortable now that Sigi Schmid has moved back into a 4-4-2. Seattle are still below the red line, but they're 4-1-1 in their last six.

Latest result: Won vs San Jose, 2-0

Next MLS match: Saturday at FC Dallas

11

LAST WEEK: 14

HIGH: 8 | LOW: 14

After suffering three straight shutouts, the 'Caps have now scored multiple goals in three of their last four outings while posting a 2-1-1 record. It's not where they thought they'd be, but the trendline is good for now.

Latest result: Won vs. Portland, 2-1

Next MLS match: Wednesday vs Chicago

12

LAST WEEK: 10

HIGH: 6 | LOW: 13

Given how many first-choice players the Quakes were missing, the 2-0 loss at Seattle was more than acceptable. Chris Wondolowski's missed PK, however – which came late in the game, and would have been the equalizer – still has to sting.

Latest result: Lost at Seattle, 2-0

Next MLS match: Wednesday vs Houston

13

LAST WEEK: 12

HIGH: 6 | LOW: 15

They're tough to beat, but no team that drops home points so often should feel good about its playoff chances. OCSC are just 1-0-4 at home, and the schedule only gets more difficult from here on out.

Latest result: Drew vs. NY Red Bulls, 1-1

Next MLS match: Sunday at Sporting KC (ESPN)

14

LAST WEEK: 8

HIGH: 1 | LOW: 14

Yikes. A month ago they were 4-1-0 and atop the Power Rankings. They've gone 0-4-2 since then, and are officially sinking like a stone. It remains to be seen if this is a death spiral, or just a tailspin.

Latest result: Lost at Houston, 2-0

Next MLS match: Wednesday at Colorado

15

LAST WEEK: 18

HIGH: 13 | LOW: 20

Nothing is quite so lovely as a road win against a conference rival. NYCFC didn't create a ton of chances but were clinical with the ones they found, and now have a two-game winning streak to celebrate.

Latest result: Won at D.C. United, 2-0

Next MLS match: Sunday at Portland (FS1)

16

LAST WEEK: 16

HIGH: 10 | LOW: 17

Just one win on the season, and they've now conceded 12 goals in their past five outings. The Revs have not been able to find any answers, and time is slowly running out.

Latest result: Lost at LA Galaxy, 4-2

Next MLS match: Saturday vs Chicago

17

LAST WEEK: 15

HIGH: 14 | LOW: 20

Badly missed their three most inventive attacking players (Fabian Espindola, Patrick Nyarko and Chris Rolfe) in a pretty painful loss to NYCFC. They've now been shut out in three of their six home games.

Latest result: Lost vs NYCFC, 2-0

Next MLS match: Friday vs. NY Red Bulls (UniMás)

18

LAST WEEK: 20

HIGH: 10 | LOW: 20

Up off the mat! Houston got their first win in nearly two months, and just their second shutout of the season all while maintaining just 33 percent possession. Safe to say they're a counterattacking team.

Latest result: Won vs. Sporting KC, 2-1

Next MLS match: Wednesday at San Jose

19

LAST WEEK: 17

HIGH: 5 | LOW: 19

The Kamara/Higuain feud deserved the headlines it got. However, the fact that this team gakked up four goals isn't on them.

Latest result: Drew vs. Montreal, 4-4

Next MLS match: Saturday vs Colorado

20

LAST WEEK: 19

HIGH: 18 | LOW: 20

Training during their bye week will hopefully have focused on creating penetration out of possession, and a little bit of danger from the run of play. With the transfer window closing on Wednesday it looks like any improvement will have to come from within – at least until July.

Latest result: Bye week

Next MLS match: Wednesday at Vancouver
