Doneil Henry suited up for West Ham United for the first time this week – though he hasn’t made it to the Premier League just yet.
The former Toronto FC defender got the start for West Ham’s U-21 Development Squad against Everton U-21 on Thursday, and he got involved right away. He was active on an early West Ham corner kick and narrowly escaped a booking for a foul in the 16th minute.
Henry went 65 minutes in his debut, with West Ham’s website noting that he impressed. Unfortunately for his team, they would go down to a 2-0 defeat on the day.
With most foreign-based Canadian players out of season, on winter break or at camp with either the senior or under-20 national teams, it was a quiet week otherwise.
David Edgar got into action for Birmingham City in the Championship, coming on as a second-half sub in Saturday’s 1-1 draw with Leeds United. Edgar – a key member of Canadian head coach Benito Floro’s side – has found playing time hard to come by since he was sent off early in a disastrous 8-0 loss in late October.
Simeon Jackson got the start for Coventry City against Gillingham, the club at which Jackson rose to prominence at the turn of the decade. The Gills notched the victory on the day, by a score of 3-1, with Jackson unable to find the score sheet.
Over in Cyprus, Daniel Haber started and went 89 minutes for Ayia Napa on Monday in a 2-0 loss to AEK Larnaca.
Dundee FC – who decided to hold Dylan Carreiro out of Canada’s lineup at the CONCACAF U-20 Championship – once again didn’t see fit to give him a minute of playing time this week. He was an unused sub for the second straight week, this time watching a 3-3 draw with Aberdeen from the bench.
