One of the hottest scorers in one of South America’s top leagues is – wait for it – a Canadian.
You read it right: On Monday, 21-year-old Lucas Cavallini notched his sixth goal in six appearances for Centro Atletico Fenix in the Uruguayan Primera Division. While his side still went down to a 3-1 defeat against River Plate, the youngster sits second in the league scoring charts a month and a half into the season.
To those Canadian fans whose paranoia may be getting the best of you, not to worry: Cavallini is fully cap-tied to Canada.
He wasn’t the only Canuck getting on the score sheet this week. Randy Edwini-Bonsu bagged his second goal of the league campaign for Stuttgarter Kickers in their 3-0 win over Unterhaching on Tuesday.
Over in Scotland, the biggest news of the week was surely Luca Gasparotto scoring his first goal in just his second appearance for Airdrieonians. The 19-year-old defender, who represented Canada at the 2011 U-17 World Cup, joined the side earlier this month on loan from Rangers.
Charlie Trafford also found the back of the net this week, with his third goal for KuPS in Finland – though the stoppage-time tally wasn’t enough to avoid a 3-2 defeat at the hands of Jaro on Friday.
And there were plenty of other Canadian goalscoring threats who saw the field for their clubs this week – Marcus Haber (Crewe Alexandra), Simeon Jackson (Coventry City), Tosaint Ricketts (Hapoel Haifa), Daniel Haber (Ayia Napa) and Jordan Hamilton (a brief cameo for CD Trofense).
David Edgar did get on the score sheet for Birmingham City, earning an assist on teammate Demarai Gray’s goal in Saturday’s 2-2 draw with Norwich City.
In Germany, fellow defender Andre Hainault had a busy few days, playing 86 minutes on Friday, then going the full 90 on Monday for VfR Aalen.
Atiba Hutchinson’s Besiktas – who fell just short of qualifying for the UEFA Champions League – got rolling in Europa League play on Thursday, earning a 1-1 draw with Asteras Tripolis. The squad then beat Bursaspor 1-0 in league play on Monday. Hutchinson went the distance in both games.
Fellow midfielders Pedro Pacheco (CD Santa Clara, Portugal) and Ethan Gage (Nykopings, Sweden) also went the full 90 for their respective clubs this week, while Fraser Aird played 74 minutes in Rangers’ 1-1 draw with Alloa Athletic on Saturday. That same day, Michael Petrasso came on as a second-half sub for Leyton Orient, where he’s currently on a month-long loan spell from QPR.
And David Monsalve continued his solid season for AC Oulu, notching his eighth clean sheet in a win on Saturday, while Tomer Chencinski recorded his second straight clean sheet for Hapoel Nir Ramat Hasharon.
