American Exports: Who's the US' top European goalscorer of all-time? Winningest goalkeeper?

AMSTERDAM – The time has come again to break out the old abacus and ledgers to count up some key statistics rung up by Americans playing in Europe.

It's been a couple of years since we last tallied a few major categories, so we'll hit the refresh button on those and then tack on a couple new ones for your always stat-thirsty perusal.

The Bell Ringers

Plain and simple, these are the all-time scoring leaders for Americans counting all play in the top two domestic divisions and cup play.

Since we last checked in on the overseas goal chart, Clint Dempsey moved from fourth to second before returning to Major League Soccer and Jozy Altidore zoomed from outside the top 15 up to third. Of course, he would need to double his European total to pass Earnie Stewart at the top of the list.

Another new addition is his replacement as Stewart's top AZ Alkmaar gun, Aron Jóhannsson. Switching international allegiance to the United States automatically put the youngster in the top 10 and he's since climbed up to sixth place.

What newcomers could crack the top 10 the next time we run a count? Not far outside the current group of leaders are five Americans still active in the Old World: Terrence Boyd (24 career goals in Europe), Jermaine Jones (22), Alejandro Bedoya (21), Oguchi Onyewu (21) and Matt Taylor (18).

The Big Game Snipers

As long as we're re-counting goals scored in Europe, why not also count goals scored specifically "in Europe"? When it comes to the Champions League, Europa League and all the previous incarnations of the two, Dempsey again is king of the hill.

We'll see how long that lasts, though, what with Boyd, Jones and Sacha Kljestan currently busy with UEFA group phases. Jóhannsson, who has but one Europa League strike to date, is also active in this year's edition.

Outside of our top six (listed below), only Bedoya, Carlos Bocanegra, Michael Bradley, Maurice Edu and Oguchi Onyewu have bagged as many as two goals in UEFA tournament play. All but the Chivas USA defender still hold day jobs in Europe.

The Helpers

The career assists list for American Exports has also seen some changes since the last review. Since no one is remotely close to Eddie Lewis' total of 40 helpers in the count that includes second-flight play, we'll scale it back to include only top division and cup set-ups for a new look.

Before moving to Seattle, Dempsey used his Tottenham tenure to race to the head of this particular list, easily passing previous assists champ DaMarcus Beasley. Fabian Johnson entered the list with his FIFA switch and Altidore has also charged up to fourth place.

Behind the Sunderland striker stand several fellow US internationals still capable of building on their European sums – all of which have already passed World Cup 2002 heroes John O'Brien and Claudio Reyna, who each ended up with an even 10 assists across the pond.

The Winning Backstops

Last but not least, let's revisit the all-time ranking for goalkeeper wins on the other side of the Atlantic. As with the all-time scoring chart, this total covers play in all first and second divisions, as well as domestic and European cup contests.

Brad Friedel is still tops by a long margin and could still add to the total if Spurs boss André Villas-Boas either restores his cup duties or needs injury cover.

The more timely news here, though, is that Everton star Tim Howard will tie former USMNT mentor Kasey Keller for second place with his next victory. This milestone could occur as soon as Saturday, when the Toffees will visit Brad Guzan's Aston Villa.

And when that happens, the New Jersey native will be even with a pair of legends on a pair of win charts; with career 17 victories in UEFA cup competitions, Howard is already deadlocked with Friedel for that record.
