USL PRO investigating alleged incident between Sporting KC loanee Kevin Ellis, Richmond Kickers fans

Kevin Ellis whips in a cross

The Richmond Kickers won the USL regular-season title on Wednesday night with a 2-0 win against Orlando City, but it's not necessarily the result or the championship that's drawing headlines a day later.

Defender Kevin Ellis, currently on loan to Orlando from Sporting Kansas City, tweeted after the match that he'd suffered abuse at the hands of Kickers fans. Those tweets have since been deleted, but on Thursday USL PRO released the following statement confirming the league is investigating the matter.

"USL has initiated an investigation into an alleged incident between Orlando City player Kevin Ellis and a small group of Richmond Kickers fans at Wednesday night’s match at City Stadium in Richmond," the statement read. "League officials are working actively to gather information from various parties. USL PRO and its clubs strongly condemn all forms of abuse and will not tolerate any such actions from its players, coaches, fans, or anyone in involved with the league."
