The Chicago Fire could soon be bolstering their roster with the addition of a midfielder who helped Uruguay finish in fourth place at the 2010 World Cup.
Uruguay international Arévalo Ríos arrived to Toyota Park to train with the Fire on Friday morning and is expected to be added to the team via a loan from Italian club Palermo once Chicago clear up one of their currently occupied international roster spots, a team source confirmed to MLSsoccer.com on Friday.
The Fire are expecting to free up at least one of those slots. They are looking to ship Sherjill MacDonald out on a loan and goalkeeper Paolo Tornaghi is reportedly close to receiving his green card, and either scenario would give Chicago the necessary space to add Rios.
The 31-year-old defensive midfielder spent last season with Palermo, scoring two goals in 27 league appearances. He has also played for several other clubs, including Club Tijuana and Monterrey, and has represented Uruguay 46 times on the international level.
