Canadian Exports: Striker Lucas Cavallini off to a flying start in Uruguay for Juventud

Canada's Lucas Cavallini

The new Clausura season in the Uruguayan Primera is just four games old and forward Lucas Cavallini already has two goals.

Cavallini scored his second in as many games on Sunday, but his club Juventud de las Piedras lost 2-1 to Danubio. Juventud has two wins and two losses and is in ninth place in the 16-team league.

In the Netherlands, Atiba Hutchinson and PSV Eindhoven kept the pressure on first-place Ajax as they returned to winning ways with a 2-0 win over RKC Waalwijk. Hutchinson played his customary 90 minutes for PSV.

In England, Junior Hoilett and Queens Park Rangers were on the wrong end of a crucial relegation battle against Aston Villa, losing 3-2 on Sunday.

QPR had come in on a rare two-game winning streak, but that came to an end with Hoilett coming off the bench for the second half. QPR is in last place in the EPL with 23 points.

In Germany, Kevin McKenna’s FC Koln remain on the outside of the promotion places in the 2. Bundesliga, but are primed to break into the top three, as their unbeaten streak is now 14 games.

McKenna played the full 90 minutes on Monday as Koln defeated Dynamo Dresden, 2-0. The win kept Koln just one point back of Kaiserslautern, who are still in third place and hold down the promotion playoff place.

Also making a push for promotion are 1860 Munich and striker Rob Friend.

Friend played the whole game on Saturday, as Munich could only muster a scoreless draw with Hertha Berlin. The point was enough to move Munich into a three-way tie for fifth with 38 points, but they’re still five back of Koln and six in arrears of Kaiserslautern.

Things aren’t anywhere near so good for Julian de Guzman and Jahn Regensburg.

Regensburg picked up a rare point with a 1-1 draw with Erzgebirge Aue on Sunday, but they need wins if they want to get off the bottom of the 2. Bundesliga table. Regensburg are in last place on 18 points and are four points adrift of the next-closest team.

It’s a new season in Norway and forward Tosaint Ricketts made his debut for new club Sadnes Ulf. Ricketts came off the bench in the second half on Sunday as they lost their opener 2-0 on the road at Stromgodset.

In Turkey, Sivasspor and Milan Borjan remain mid-table in the Super Lig. Last week they snapped a three-game losing streak, but they couldn’t build any momentum as they picked up a 2-1 loss to Akhisar Belediyespor on Sunday.

Borjan played the full game as Sivasspor remain in 10th place in the 18-team league.

In Cyprus, APOEL, with Canadian defender Mike Klukowski, are cruising atop the 1. Division standings. APOEL won their seventh league game in a row on Sunday as they demolished Paphos 6-0. Klukowski played the full 90 minutes for APOEL.

It’s now two wins in a row for Issey Nakajima-Farran and Alki -- a streak that’s moved them up to tenth in Cyprus’ top league. Nakajima-Farran started and played 60 minutes on Saturday as Alki beat Nea Salamis 1-0 on Saturday.

In Portugal, midfielder Pedro Pacheco and Santa Clara are up to fourth on the back of a five-game unbeaten run in the Liga de Honra. Pacheco played 75 minutes on Sunday as Santa Clara played Sporting Covilha to a scoreless draw.

The top two teams make the leap up to Portugal’s top flight and Santa Clara is six points back of second place.

In Slovenia, Stefan Cebara’s Celje saw their five-game unbeaten streak snapped as they lost, 3-1, to Olimpija. Cebara played the full 90 minutes. Celje sits in fifth place in the 10-team league.
