Canada to play friendly vs. Japan on March 22 in Qatar

The Canadian men's national team will face Japan in a friendly on March 22 in Doha, Qatar, the Canadian Soccer Association announced on Thursday.

It will be the 64th-ranked Canadians’ third match of 2013 after a pair of games later this month against Denmark (Jan. 26) and the United States (Jan. 30).

The last time Canada played the 22nd-ranked Japanese was at the 2001 FIFA Confederations Cup in Niigata, Japan, when the hosts beat the Canucks 3-0.

Interim head coach and former Vancouver Whitecaps FC assistant coach Colin Miller will lead the team into the two games this month as Canada begin preparations for July’s CONCACAF Gold Cup. Miller said on Tuesday that his agreement to coach Canada was only for the January games and discussions went no further than that. He also is preparing for his first season in charge at FC Edmonton of the NASL.

The CSA is still looking for a permanent replacement for Stephen Hart, who resigned this past October following Canada’s elimination from 2014 World Cup qualifying contention.

The roster for January’s games is scheduled to be released sometime next week.
