PORTLAND, Ore. — Central defender Mamadou “Futty” Danso underwent an MRI on his left shoulder on Monday at Sports Medicine Oregon and is expected to be out of action for the Portland Timbers for 2-4 weeks.
Danso was injured in the 23rd minute of Saturday’s 1-0 loss to the visiting Colorado Rapids at JELD-WEN Field. He was challenging for a header with Rapids’ forward Caleb Folan with the injury occurred.
Given that Danso left on a stretcher and was taken to the hospital to be examined, the prognosis of a return in two to four weeks is welcome news.
The Gambian national was one of six Timbers players nominated last week for MLS all-star consideration and has been a steady, calming presence for the team’s defense.
Danso scored two of the team’s biggest goals for far this season. He headed in the winner to defeat the Philadelphia Union 1-0 on May 6 and a week later he scored on a nearly identical play at Qwest Field in Seattle. His equalizer earned Portland a 1-1 draw with Sounders FC.
