College Round-up: Akron triumphs again

Preparations for the fall season continued over the weekend for major college programs across the nation.

Michigan, last yearā€™s unlikely College Cup entrants, traveled to Pontiac, Mich., to play in the Michigan Bucks College Cup, which included Akron, Notre Dame and Oakland University.

With four games on the schedule, each match was shortened to 60 minutes. The Zips emerged as the dayā€™s winners, grabbing 1-0 wins over Michigan and Oakland, respectively. Transfer Kayvon Afsarifard scored against Oakland while Chad Barson tallied in the win over Michigan.

It wasnā€™t as positive an experience for the Wolverines who, along with the loss to Akron, fell to Notre Dame 3-2 later in the day.

Louisville, fresh off a trip to Brazil, traveled to Chicago to face a Fire reserve side in a Sunday friendly. The Cardinals got off to a decent start against their professional counterparts, but they were eventually overrun as Chicago won 4-0. Gabriel Ferrari, Davis Paul, Orr Barouch and Victor Pineda all scored in the win.

After a disappointing fall season, Wake Forest won a second straight spring match Friday evening, defeating High Point 3-1. Andy Lubahnā€™s first-half header was the difference at the break before a scoring spree in the final ten minutes rounded out the scoring.
