Revs part ways with midfielder Niouky

The New England Revolution have parted ways with midfielder Joseph Niouky.

The New England Revolution and midfielder Joseph Niouky have gone their separate ways.

The two sides announced on Wednesday that they had come to a mutual agreement to terminate Niouky's contract and he will not be with the squad for Saturday night’s match against the Houston Dynamo.

The Revs say that this move was not made with the intention of opening up a roster spot for the purposes of a player acquisition.

The move comes as somewhat of a surprise given that the Senegalese holding midfielder had done a fine job in central midfield, including filling in for Shalrie Joseph during the latter’s protracted absence earlier in the season.

The 24-year-old appeared to be a fixture on the New England squad, with only six players having appeared in more matches than Niouky.

Although he played in every SuperLiga match, manager Steve Nicol did not select Niouky to start in any of the last five league matches after he had received the starting nod in 11 of the first 12 MLS games on the campaign.
