Gaven hernia surgery a success

SECAUCUS, N.J. - MetroStars midfielder Eddie Gaven underwent a successful procedure yesterday to repair an inguinal hernia injury or sports hernia. Dr. Richard Cattey performed the procedure at Columbia Hospital in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The MetroStars 18-year-old MLS Best XI honoree will be out six-eight weeks.

The MetroStars sent Gaven to see the specialist after the player complained of discomfort during postseason action against D.C. United.

The Hamilton, N.J. native had a very successful sophomore season with the MetroStars, tallying 21 points on seven goals and seven assists, garnering MLS Best XI honors and a starting position on the Eastern Conference All-Star team. Earlier this summer, Gaven also received his first national cap in an international friendly against Poland on July 11th when he entered the 1-1 game in the 82nd minute, making him the fourth youngest player in U.S. history to play in a senior national team game.
