A lot of people watched the US national team lost 1-0 to Germany on Thursday. In fact it was a record amount.

According to information technology news site TechCrunch.com, there were 1.7 million concurrent viewers of the match on the WatchESPN app and website, a record for the platform and a number that betters the number of people who watched the Super Bowl via Fox's similar application by 600,000.

In addition to the ESPN number, TechCrunch reports that another 750,000 people watched the live Univision stream, making for 2.45 million total online viewers.

As the article notes, there are some caveats when comparing to the numbers Fox brought in for the Super Bowl – first and foremost being that Fox Sports Go, its streaming platform, was brand new for that event.

The World Cup has drawn record TV ratings, and set new records for online fan engagement as well.
