Werder Bremen bewildered by Bochum

Shinji Ono (L) twice assisted his club, middle of the league Bochum, to upset Bundesliga's best at Weserstadion.

BREMEN - Ten-man Werder Bremen slipped back in the Bundesliga title race as Bochum came from behind to claim a surprise win.

The visitors had debutant Shinji Ono to thank for their victory after falling behind to Aaron Hunt's strike a minute before the break.

The Japanese star came off the bench to set up first Benjamin Auer and then, with just six minutes remaining, Anthar Yahia.

In between Naldo saw red for Werder, who simply imploded in the final quarter of the game.

With Ivan Klasnic sidelined because of a foot injury, Werder coach Thomas Schaaf paired Hunt with Markus Rosenberg in attack.

And it was Rosenberg who made an early impression, drawing a save out of Jan Lastuvka with a strike from 20 yards.

At the other end, Naldo attempted to clear Mimoun Azaouagh's corner, but inadvertently sent the ball goalwards and Tim Wiese had to steer it over the crossbar.

Of the two keepers it was Lastuvka, though, who saw more of the action, pulling off a stunning reflex save to deny Diego before keeping out Petri Pasanen's shot from distance.

Per Mertesacker presented the visitors with a glorious chance just before the half hour when he gave the ball away, but Stanislav Sestak fired wide from 10 yards.

Werder piled forwards and Hunt found himself one on one with Lastuvka, who again saved before Wiese was called into action to deny Sestak.

Hunt missed another chance four minutes from half-time, but finally got his name on the scoresheet when a corner broke to him inside the penalty area and he converted brilliantly.

Bremen were good value for their lead and could have extend it after the break, but Naldo's free-kick was saved by Lastuvka and Hunt fired over.

But the introduction of Ono after 67 minutes changed the game - he had only been on the pitch for a minute when his volleyed pass set up Auer to finish.

Things got worse for Bremen when Naldo was sent off for bringing down Sestak two minutes later.

And Ono completed an astounding turnaround when he set up Yahia to head home.
