UNDEFEATED RED-AND-WHITE TAKE WINNING STREAK INTO FIRST HONDA SUPER CLÁSICO OF 2009:
Chivas USA captured a 2-1 win over the defending MLS Cup champion Columbus Crew on Sunday at The Home Depot Center, extending the club's record to 3-0 on the season. Atiba Harris opened the scoring for the Red-and-White in the first half, and Eduardo Lillingston broke a 1-1 deadlock in the 50th minute to earn the win. The victory tied the team with Seattle Sounders FC atop the Western Conference, as both teams have won all three of their matches in 2009. Now Chivas USA looks toward the first Honda Super Clásico of the year against the LA Galaxy, taking place this Saturday, April 11, at 7:30 p.m. at The Home Depot Center. It will be a home match for the Galaxy, who fell 3-2 to the Colorado Rapids this past weekend and are 0-1-1 on the season.
CHIVAS USA TO HOST SEATTLE SOUNDERS FC ON APRIL 18 AS BEST OF THE WEST SQUARE OFF:
The expansion Seattle Sounders FC will visit Chivas USA on Saturday, April 18, at 7:30 p.m. at The Home Depot Center in an early battle of two of the top teams in Major League Soccer, as both the Red-and-White and the Sounders have started the season with three consecutive wins. Featuring head coach Sigi Schmid, who led the Columbus Crew to the MLS Cup last year and has previously coached both the LA Galaxy and UCLA, the Sounders have yet to concede a goal. The first 10,000 fans through the gate for the April 18 match will receive a special edition Chivas USA Cinch Backpack, courtesy of Time Warner Cable. RED-AND-WHITE EARN THIRD STRAIGHT VICTORY IN 2-1 WIN OVER CHAMPION CREW:
The Red-and-White extended the best start in team history with a 2-1 victory over the defending MLS Cup champion Columbus Crew on Sunday at The Home Depot Center, receiving goals from forwards Atiba Harris and Eduardo Lillingston. Harris scored the first of the game in the 25th minute after good work from Chivas USA youth product Gerson Mayen, who drove to the endline before crossing the ball back into the middle for Harris to slot into the net. After Crew defender Andy Iro tied the game in the 37th minute, Mexican forward Lillingston scored his second game-winner in as many games, finishing from close range after a goalmouth scramble in the 50th minute. Goalkeeper Zach Thornton made four saves to earn the win, and Chivas USA is now tied with Seattle for the best mark in the league, with three wins and no losses.
EL CAMINO REAL HIGH SCHOOL IN APRIL 18 YOUTH SOCCER SPOTLIGHT:
For Chivas USA's home game against Seattle Sounders FC on April 18, the Youth Soccer Spotlight will highlight the El Camino Real High School Boys Soccer Team, the CIF City and State Champions. Coaches David Hussey and Ian Kogan helped the team to a 24-3-3 record. The Youth Soccer Spotlight is a program that debuted earlier this year and features a local soccer team or club at every home game for the Red-and-White this season. The team will be highlighted on Chivas USA broadcasts, as well as on the field prior to the game, and will even get the chance to have a team photo on the Red-and-White's bench. CHIVAS USA DEVELOPMENT ACADEMY TEAMS EARN MATCHING WINS OVER IRVINE STRIKERS:
The Chivas USA U-18 and U-16 Teams each earned 3-1 victories over the Irvine Strikers this past Saturday at Concordia University in Irvine. The U-16's kicked off first and received goals from Alexis Flores, Jesus Fuentes, and Alberto Velasquez, and the U-18's followed and the goalscorers were Bryan de la Fuente and Jesse Paredes, who had two goals. It was the second consecutive win for the U-16's and the third straight for the U-18's, who will both face Arsenal FC at UC-Riverside on Saturday, April 18, in their next matches. CHIVAS DE GUADALAJARA UPDATE:
Chivas de Guadalajara got back on track this Saturday with a 1-0 victory at home against San Luis in the first game under new Head Coach Omar Arellano. Javier Hernández scored the game's only goal in the 35th minute, heading in a cross from Omar Arellano, the son of the new Head Coach. The win improves the team's record to 4-3-5 (W-L-T) and puts the team in third place in Group 2, just one point behind rivals Club América. Next up for Guadalajara is an away match against Atlante on Saturday, April 11.
