Last Game
Earthquakes 1, Real Salt Lake 1; July 3, 2009; Rio Tinto Stadium; Sandy, Utah

The San Jose Earthquakes appeared to have their first away victory of the season in the bag until an own goal by Chris Leitch in stoppage time left the Quakes and Real Salt Lake with a 1-1 draw Friday night at Rio Tinto Stadium. Arturo Alvarez scored in the 63rd minute for San Jose and then Real went a man down when Fabian Espindola was sent off in the 77th minute. But Leitch poked the ball into his own net to leave both teams with a share of the spoils. In the 37th minute, the home side had the best chance of the half for either team thanks to some clever combination play from Espindola and Yura Movsisyan. Espindola slotted a clever ball through to Movsisyan, who sent a beautiful ball of his own back to Espindola. Joe Cannon came out to close down the through ball, but Espindola got there first. However Cannon was positioned well and he blocked Espindola's first-time, point-blank shot with his legs. The Earthquakes were nearly gifted an own goal in the 42nd minute as Borchers and Chris Wingert failed to communicate on a bouncing ball. Borchers headed the ball off Wingert and over Nick Rimando's head, but the RSL goalkeeper was able to run back and snatch the ball before it could get to the goal line. Just before halftime, again Espindola got behind the San Jose defense in the penalty area, but Cannon alertly came off his line to grab the through ball only moments before Espindola could receive it. San Jose finally broke the scoreless draw in the 63rd minute when Campos combined with Alvarez near the top of Salt Lake's penalty area. Surrounded by defenders, Alvarez found Campos with his back to the goal. Campos laid a square ball back to Alvarez, who used his ball-handling skills to work his way from left to right across the area, leaving several defenders in his wake. Once in the clear, he calmly slotted the ball past the onrushing Rimando just inside the right post to give the Earthquakes a 1-0 lead. The game got heated and there were several incidents after the play, finally culminating in a straight red card for Espindola for retaliation after a hard tackle by Brandon McDonald in the 77th minute. San Jose's fortunes turned, however, in the first minute of stoppage time. Morales tried to break through the defense when the ball pinged off Leitch's foot and slowly rolled past Cannon and inside the post to level the match 1-1.

Last Match vs. Toronto FC
Earthquakes 2, Toronto FC 0; October 25, 2008; Buck Shaw Stadium; Santa Clara, Calif.
The San Jose Earthquakes finished the season with a 2-0 win over Toronto FC at Buck Shaw Stadium. Ryan Cochrane scored for the Earthquakes in the 49th minute and Shea Salinas scored for the second straight game, netting a penalty kick to close out the game. The home side dominated the match for long stretches, only to be repeatedly denied by TFC 'keeper Greg Sutton. San Jose finally found a way through four minutes into the second half, when Cochrane headed home Ronnie O'Brien's corner kick. Salinas then put the game away with a stoppage-time penalty. Despite making more lineup alterations, it was the home side that settled first. Darren Huckerby worked a one-two with Scott Sealy in the second minute, but the Englishman's subsequent cross was just too high for Ryan Johnson. A Corrales shot from just outside the box was tipped over the bar by the Toronto goalkeeper in the 12th minute, and Sutton had to be at his best again seven minutes later, batting away a Ned Grabavoy blast. The Canadian international then completed a trifecta of saves in the 29th minute, parrying away a fierce drive by Johnson. With the Quakes pouring forward, opportunities existed for TFC to nail San Jose on the break, but suspect passing out of midfield repeatedly stymied their efforts. Shortly after the break, the Quakes finally found a way past Sutton, with Cochrane nodding home O'Brien's corner kick from the right wing for his second goal of the season. Toronto showed a renewed sense of urgency, with a Rohan Ricketts cross nearly connecting with a TFC attacker. But it was San Jose which continued to create the better chances. O'Brien sprung Johnson on a breakaway in the 56th minute, but the Jamaican shot wide of the TFC goal. O'Brien nearly scored himself three minutes later, but his pile driver was palmed away by Sutton. The flurry was finished up in the 62nd minute, when substitute Alvarez saw his shot on the turn carom off the crossbar. San Jose made their last substitution of the night in the 67th minute, with Salinas replacing Huckerby. The Englishman was announced as the team MVP just before game time, and came off to raucous applause from the San Jose fans. San Jose finally put the game away in stoppage time. Another twisting run down the left wing by Salinas saw him upended in the box by Toronto defender Kevin Harmse. The rookie then rifled home the ensuing spot kick for his second goal in as many games, leaving the Quakes fans with one last reason to celebrate.
