Last Match
Earthquakes 0, Toronto FC 0; July 19, 2008; BMO Field;
Toronto, Ontario, Canada
The Earthquakes earned a gritty road draw 0-0 against Toronto FC at BMO Field Saturday afternoon. San Jose newcomers Francisco Lima, Scott Sealy and Darren Huckerby all made their debuts in the Starting XI after signing with the club earlier in the week. Also in the lineup was defender Ryan Cochrane, making his first league appearance since June 22 due to an ankle injury. The Earthquakes' best early chance came on a direct free kick in the 18th minute. Ronnie O'Brien's initial kick was blocked by a sliding Ibrahim, who was booked for moving too early and delaying the restart. San Jose then tried a bit of trickery as O'Brien lined up to take the kick, but then jogged aside as Lima struck the ball. Lima's shot, his first as an Earthquake, went high over the net. In the 34th minute, Marvell Wynne tried an angled shot from the right side. Earthquakes goalkeeper Joe Cannon knocked Wynne's ball away and the effort left Cannon flat on his stomach. The rebound went directly to Amado Guevara, but the forward's chance at the wide-open left side of the net sailed over the crossbar. TFC winger Rohan Ricketts was carrying the ball with Ibrahim trailing for a pass when Cannon gathered the ball in a hard slide that sent Ricketts sprawling, and left Cannon laying on the ground after initially standing to throw the ball downfield. After a few moments of attention from the club trainer, however, Cannon was able to continue. The attacking drought continued as both teams combined for just one shot in the first 23 minutes of the half. The Reds largely held the ball on San Jose's side of the field, but couldn't turn their time of possession into a solid scoring chance. In the 68th minute, TFC was awarded a penalty. Set piece specialist Guevara took the shot for TFC, but Cannon guessed right and blocked the shot on the left side of the net.
Last Match vs. New York Red Bulls
Red Bulls 2, Earthquakes 0; Apr. 27, 2008; Giants Stadium; East Rutherford, N.J.
The Earthquakes fell 2-0 to the New York Red Bulls Sunday afternoon at Giants Stadium. Mike Magee scored a penalty kick with 11 minutes to go and Jozy Altidore netted a second in stoppage time to give the Red Bulls the win. Ivan Guerrero had the first chance for the Quakes in the opening 15 minutes. Kei Kamara received a throw-in from Ronnie O'Brien on the left wing and Kamara then slipped a pass behind the defense for Guerrero. He appeared to have an opening inside the box, but Chris Leitch recovered to knock the ball away from Guerrero to end the threat. In the 38th minute, Nick Garcia provided the save of the half with a goal line clearance of a Claudio Reyna shot to keep the game scoreless. Reyna got a pass from John Wolyniec inside the box and hit a shot to the far post. Quakes goalkeeper Joe Cannon got a hand on the shot to slow it down and Garcia snuck in to clear the ball away just before it crossed the line. The Red Bulls took the lead in the 79th minute from the penalty spot with a goal from Mike Magee. Wolyniec found Jozy Altidore with a through ball and Altidore broke in with Ryan Cochrane defending. Cochrane fouled Altidore right at the edge of the box and the referee pointed to the spot. Magee then blasted a shot past Cannon. Moments later, Kamara had a chance to equalize for San Jose. James Riley found Ivan Guerrero on the wing and the Honduran international sent a cross into the box for Kamara, who pushed a header to the near post. Red Bulls goalkeeper Jon Conway dove to his right to make the save to preserve the 1-0 advantage. Garcia cleared another ball off the line in the waning moments of the game on a header by Wolyniec. With the ball bouncing in the box, Wolyniec leapt and headed the ball past a charging Cannon, but Garcia got back to clear the ball away for a second time. Altidore netted a goal in the final seconds of the match off a pass from Wolyniec to complete the scoring. Wolyniec received the ball in the box and laid it off to Altidore, who tapped a shot off the post and in for his second goal of the year.
