Fed up Regueiro leaves Uruguay
MONTEVIDEO - Uruguay midfielder Mario Regueiro has decided to stop playing international football for a while because of a lack of opportunities under Oscar Washington Tabarez.
The Murcia player informed his team-mates and Tabarez of his decision on Tuesday morning, a few hours before the Charruas flew to Brazil for their World Cup qualifier on Wednesday.
Some local reports said Regueiro was quitting due to personal reasons, but Tabarez told El Observador newspaper that he was uncomfortable with the way the boss was treating him.
Tabarez did not agree with Regueiro's decision: "I was surprised and tried to convince him to change his mind.
"As the coach, I cannot agree with opinions about a player being damaged by the national team.
"I cannot accept a player is wasting time because I think the national team never damages.
"However, it's a personal point of view and I cannot judge this.
"Maybe he [Regueiro] has not had too many opportunities, but it was not because of any other intention than building the best team. I treated him the same as the rest of his team-mates."
Brazil coach Dunga makes no change to line-up
SAO PAULO - Brazil coach Dunga is not planning to make changes to his starting line-up for Wednesday's World Cup qualifier against Uruguay.
Brazil failed to beat Peru on Sunday, drawing 1-1, but the coach looks set to field the same 11 players against the Charruas.
"We've played some friendlies and won the Copa America title. If a player does not play well in just one match, I won't take him out of the team," said Dunga.
"Obviously, if a player doesn't play well for six or seven games, it's time to change. But if that doesn't happen and I change, the player could lose confidence in himself."
Lucio will miss the Uruguay test as he is banned for picking up a second yellow card on Sunday, but Dunga has not decided on his replacement either in defence or as captain.
He added: "We have two days to train. I haven't decided anything on that yet.
"I have some options for the captain - maybe one of the captains in the Copa America (Gilberto or Juan)."
Lugano pledges win over Brazil
SAO PAULO - Uruguay captain Diego Lugano promised his side will do everything in their power to beat Brazil at Morumbi after dropping two points in Sunday's 2-2 home draw with Chile.
The Charruas want to recover the points they feel they missed out on at the weekend, despite Wednesday's rivals being even tougher opponents to overcome when they play in their own country.
The Fenerbahce defender said: "The qualifiers are a matter of losing some points at home and winning some others as visitors. A draw against Brazil would be a good result, but we go looking for the victory.
"Uruguay are one of the few national teams in South America who go to Brazil looking forward to beating them."
Midfielder Ignacio Gonzalez added that a draw would not be a bad result for Oscar Tabarez's side: "We need the points in Brazil, so we go there to clinch at least one."
