WASHINGTON, D.C. - D.C. United announced today it has agreed to play an exhibition match with the Richmond Kickers of United Soccer League's First Division. The friendly is scheduled for Wednesday, August 30, 2006 at 7:00 p.m. ET at the University of Richmond Stadium in Richmond, VA.
"We are pleased to be playing the Kickers again this year," said United Technical Director Dave Kasper. "The atmosphere at the University of Richmond Stadium is always a good one and we look forward to a competitive match."
This year's exhibition will mark the seventh meeting between the two clubs, with D.C. United leading the all-time series 3-1-2. Current United midfielder Clyde Simms spent his first professional season (2004) as a member of the Kickers and was a part of the team that ousted the Black-and-Red from the U.S. Open Cup. He pulled on a D.C. jersey in 2005 and helped United defeat the Kickers 3-1 in the fourth round of the same tournament - which was also D.C.'s last visit to Richmond.
"It is always an honor to host D.C. United, the most storied club in U.S. history," commented Richmond Kickers Head Coach Leigh Cowlishaw. "It is an exciting occasion for our team, fans and community and this will be a great finale to the season."
"For years, whether it has been in the U.S. Open Cup or in friendlies, we have had many memorable battles with our friendly rival D.C. United," said Richmond Kickers Vice President & General Manager Paul Sterbenz. "We are pleased to once again offer to the Richmond community and our fans an entertaining evening of high-level professional soccer."
General admission tickets are $15 and can be ordered in advance via www.richmondkickers.com.
