Torino climb over sliding Udinese

Torino defeated Udinese for their first victory in 2009 to climb out of the relegation zone.

Granata defender Paolo Dellafiore struck in the 80th minute to hand his team all three points, while Udinese ended the game reduced to 10 men after defender Maurizio Domizzi was sent off for dissent.

The outcome lifted Walter Novellino's side to 17th in the standings, one point clear of the drop zone while it ended Udinese's four game streak without defeat.

Udinese went into the encounter in Turin looking for their first win on the road since October 29.

Pasquale Marino's men welcomed back striker Gaetano D´Agostino, who missed last weekend´s 1-1 draw against Siena.

The visitors were first to threaten with Christian Obodo´s right-foot strike from the edge of the area saved by Torino goalkeeper Matteo Sereni.

Shortly after, Sereni did well to come off his line and thwart Floro Flores, who was ready to fire from Gaetano D´Agostino´s long ball.

Midway through the first half, Simone Pepe´s curled free-kick went just over the crossbar.

Toro had the first chance of the game after 26 minutes. Andrea Gasbarroni picked up the ball outside the Udinese area, dribbled past one defender before forcing Udinese goalkeeper Emanuele Belardi to save his right-foot effort at full stretch.

At the other end, Pepe should have done better, but his powerful free-kick from the left was straight at Sereni.

The hosts continued to surge forward and should have gone into the break with the lead.

Matteo Rubin´s stinging drive from long range went inches wide of Belardi´s far post.

Udinese showed more determination after the re-start and could have broken the deadlock soon after.

Cesare Natali´s header from Eugenio Corini´s free-kick went just wide of the near post.

On the hour mark, Belardi did well to come off his line and deny Rolando Bianchi, who was ready to fire from the center of the area.

Fabio Quagliarella´s volley then went high and wide as Udinese showed more determination.

Toro twice had the chance to take the lead in the 73rd minute but Belardi denied Ignazio Abete and substitute Roberto Stellone from close range.

The Granata´s efforts paid off soon after.

Dellafiore took advantage of a scrummage inside the area following Stellone´s corner kick to fire past Belardi.

Belardi denied Toro a second with a good save from Stellone´s right-footed strike from the edge of the area.

Toro should have put the game beyond their rivals reach three minutes from time, but Belardi fully stretched to clear Cesare Natali´s powerful header from Rosina´s cross.

Udinese almost punished Toro's lack of cutting edge in front of goal deep in stoppage time but Christian Zapata´s header from Pepe´s cross was cleared by Sereni as the hosts held on for victory to leave Udinese in 12th position in the standings, nine points clear of the drop zone.
