Stuttgart keep marching over Frankfurt

Stuttgart

Stuttgart continued their march up the Bundesliga table with a convincing victory over Eintracht Frankfurt that puts them in fourth place.

Cacau opened the scoring in the 33rd minute and Mario Gomez struck yet again in the 48th to win it for the hosts, who have lost just once in the last 15 games.

Stuttgart have won five straight games - and given up just one goal - to move to 54 points, just one point behind second-placed Hertha Berlin and three adrift of Wolfsburg, who play on Sunday.

Bayern Munich in third and Hamburg in fifth are also even on 54 points.

Frankfurt remained on 32 points in 11th place - a solid nine points from the relegation zone.

Neither team created much going forward early on, and the first chance came at the half-hour mark. Sami Khedira crossed into the area where Martin Lanig had plenty of space but was stopped excellently by Frankfurt goalkeeper Markus Proll.

Stuttgart grabbed the lead three minutes later. Ludovic Magnin croseed from the left for Cacau to head past Proll at the near left post.

The guests nearly equalized six minutes before the break. Martin Fenin was all alone in the area but his blast struck the left post and back into play.

Stuttgart doubled the lead three minutes after the break. Magnin sent a free kick from the right side into the area and Lanig headed on to Gomez, who poked past Proll for his 12th goal of the second half and 19th of the season.

Roberto Hilbert's free kick from the left side went just wide right nine minutes later as Stuttgart were determined to increase the lead.

Cacau's long blast from 22 yards struck the right post with 20 minutes to play. And Khalid Boulahrouz hit over the bar seven minutes later for Stuttgart's last chance of the game.
