SAN JOSE, Calif. - San Jose Earthquakes forward Alejandro Moreno has been named the Earthquakes Maggiano's Player of the Month for the month of August the team announced Tuesday at Maggiano's Little Italy restaurant in Santana Row in San Jose. Earthquakes midfielder Dwayne De Rosario picked up the team's Goal of the Month award for his August 6 goal against the Columbus Crew.
Moreno, 26, who now leads the Earthquakes in scoring with seven goals, had another strong month for San Jose in August, leading the team to a 3-0-1 record. Moreno started all four games and scored one goal and notched one assist, as the Quakes stretched their Western Conference lead to eight points at the end of August. Moreno spearheaded a Quakes attack that saw the team have six different goalscorers in the month.
After notching an assist on the Quakes lone goal on August 13 in a 1-1 tie against the Colorado Rapids, Moreno scored the first goal in San Jose's 2-1 win over the Los Angeles Galaxy. Mark Chung cracked a free kick that was heading toward the middle of the goal. Galaxy goalkeeper Kevin Hartman jumped to get the ball, but Moreno got to it first, redirecting it into the far corner of the net for his second goal this season against his former team.
De Rosario scored the team's Goal of the Month on August 6 in a 2-1 win over the Crew. The play started deep in the Quakes end of the field, as they masterfully moved the ball up the right sideline before Moreno dished off a pass to Ronald Cerritos at midfield. Cerritos lofted a perfect pass over the Crew defense that De Rosario was able to run on to. De Rosario controlled the ball before sending a low shot to the left of sliding Columbus goalkeeper Jonny Walker for the 1-0 lead.
The Earthquakes will look to move closer to clinching home-field advantage in the MLS Cup Playoffs as they host Club Deportivo Chivas USA on Saturday, September 10 at 7:00 p.m. PT at Spartan Stadium. The game will air live on radio on 1590 AM KLIV (English) and 1370 AM KZSF (Spanish) and the first 5,000 fans will receive a free soccer ball.
