Reserves: RSL 4, Dynamo 1

Park City, UT (Sunday, August 5, 2007) - The Real Salt Lake Reserve squad (2-3-0, 6 points) earned its second win of the season in impressive form, emerging victorious Sunday over the Houston Dynamo Reserves (2-3-1, 7 points) at the Quinn's Junction Complex in Park City, Utah. RSL struck four times in the first half to take a commanding four-goal lead into halftime and cruised to an easy 4-1 victory, as playmaker Andy Williams tallied two goals and an assist after sitting out Saturday night's 1-0 MLS win due to his red card on July 28 vs. New England.

The RSL Reserves were the aggressors from the first whistle, pressuring the Houston defense through Williams and French trialist Tony Vairelles. In the ninth minute, Vairelles hit a well-struck shot that forced Dynamo GK Zach Wells into a sprawling save. Despite being unable to score, RSL earned its first corner kick of the match when Wells' save bounced across the endline. RSL midfielder Christian Jimenez took the ensuing kick and found defender Chris Lancos unmarked in the middle, Lancos making no mistake with his chance and heading the ball into the back of the net for a 1-0 RSL lead.

Lancos continued his offensive pressure in the 26th minute when he forced Wells into a tip save that resulted in another RSL corner. In a nearly identical play to the first goal, Williams took the corner and found defender Jack Stewart at the back post. Stewart's header snuck just inside the right post to give RSL a 2-0 lead.

In the 37th minute, Williams decided it was his turn to do the scoring. As he received a ball in the middle of the field from midfielder Kenny Cutler, he noticed Wells was off of his line. He took one simple touch and fired a 40-yard frozen rope over the helpless keeper's head and into the upper corner, for a 3-0 lead.

Williams struck again in the 44th minute when he took a long ball from Jimenez on the left side, collecting the ball at the left elbow of the penalty box. He took two quick touches and saw Wells, again, coming off of his line. Seeing the opportunity, he lofted a quick left-footed chip that, again found the back of the net past a sprawling Wells.

Emerging from halftime with a 4-0 lead, the RSL Reserves started the second half content to control the tempo and keep possession. The conservative approach forced much of the play into the middle of the field for the first 20 minutes of the second stanza. However, in the 63rd minute, Houston finally got on the board. RSL goalkeeper Chris Seitz misplayed a long ball, which bounced off Seitz' hands and was collected by Dynamo midfielder Chris Wondolowski. The resulting shot was saved at the line, but Houston forward Paul Dalglish was there to hammer the rebound into the back of the net, closing the RSL lead to 4-1.

The action got physical from there, with each team on the receiving end of several aggressive tackles. In the 71st minute, Vairelles and Dynamo defender Pat Ianni were each awarded yellow cards for a minor confrontation. Several minutes later, emotions boiled over.

RSL forward Atiba Harris slid for a 50-50 ball at the top of the penalty area, challenging Wells. The ball was collected by the Houston goalkeeper, who jumped over Harris, distributed the ball to his outside back and immediately turned went after Harris, taking a swing at the 6-3 forward. Harris retaliated and the two had to be separated as both benches cleared. Each player was ejected by referee Feliciano Palomino and both teams finished the game with 10 players.

Despite several more scoring opportunities for each side, neither team was able to capitalize, as the game ended with a 4-1 final score. The win marks the RSL Reserve's second straight and doubled their season point total, to six.

The Real Salt Lake Reserves can next be seen in action on Sunday, August 19 hosting the Chicago Fire Reserves at the Quinn's Junction Complex in Park City, Utah. The Houston Dynamo Reserves will take the field on Wednesday, August 15 while hosting the Toronto FC Reserves.
