According to a report on Brazilian news web site Globo, 23 US cities have been identified as potential sites to host the 2016 Copa America Centenario that will be held in the United States.

The list of possible venues reportedly came up during a CONMEBOL Executive Committee meeting, and the expectation is that the number of cities will be reduced.

The document produced by Globo shows 11 cities in one color: Seattle, Los Angeles, Kansas City, Dallas, Houston, Tampa, Nashville, Philadelphia, New York, Boston and Washington, D.C.

Another 12 cities were highlighted in a different shade: San Francisco, San Diego, Phoenix, Denver, St. Louis, Indianapolis, Chicago, Detroit, Cleveland, Baltimore, Charlotte and Jacksonville.

The report indicated that "the cities of Miami and Atlanta, which have a large concentration of Latinos, were discarded because their stadiums will be under construction during the Copa America Centenario."

The new Atlanta stadium, which will be home to the MLS expansion team that will begin play there in 2017, is set to open that same year.

A David Beckham-led ownership group is currently pursuing a downtown soccer stadium plan in Miami in the hope of landing an MLS expansion team.

The 10 CONMEBOL nations, including the likes of Brazil and Argentina, will participate in the Copa America Centenario as well as six CONCACAF teams: the USA, Mexico, Costa Rica, Jamaica and two teams among the top finishers of the 2015 CONCACAF Gold Cup.
