Reggina hit relegation with Siena loss

Siena

Reggina remain deep in the relegation mire after suffering their 12th Serie A defeat of the season at the hands of Siena.

Mario Frick's goal 15 minutes from time was enough to give the Bianconeri three points which sees them leapfrog Sampdoria and move up to the relative comfort of 14th spot.

The Amaranto, in contrast, stay second from bottom and could slip to the foot of the standings if Chievo beat Napoli.

The first half was conducted mostly in the middle third of the pitch, with the hosts creating the bulk of the opportunities but unable to find the breakthrough.

Siena mustered the first chance of the game after two minutes when Daniele Galloppoa's cross-shot from 25 yards skimmed just wide.

Two minutes later, Reggina goalkeeper Andrea Campagnolo was forced to block a swerving shot from the edge of the area from Paul Codrea.

Colombia right-back Juan Camilo Zuniga was next to try his luck for the Tuscan team, dribbling past two defenders but unable to get his shot on target.

Siena stopper Emanuele Manitta was called into serious action for the first time after 25 minutes, producing a decent save to keep out a Franco Brienza blast.

The action soon returned to the other end of the pitch, however, where Daniele Portanova leapt highest to meet a corner but could not direct his header past Campagnolo.

Manitta pulled off an amazing save two minutes into the second half to preserve his clean sheet, leaving Bernardo Corradi dumbfounded after his header from Alessio Sestu's left-wing cross had seemed destined to nestle in the back of the Siena net.

The visitors found themselves with another great chance to go ahead shortly afterwards when Edgar Barreto's mazy run saw him facing a one on one with Manitta, but again there was no end product.

Portanova then passed up a golden opportunity to put Siena ahead just before the hour mark, when he found himself in front of goal with the ball at his feet needing just to tap it straight in.

But somehow he chipped over the bar, much to Campagnolo's relief.

Campagnolo did well to keep out a left-footed Cristiano Del Grosso effort from just inside the area midway through the second period, but was powerless to do anything about the game's only goal 15 minutes from time.

Veteran frontman Frick - Liechtenstein's all-time record goalscorer - latched onto a long ball down the middle from Portanova, held off the visiting defenders and struck the decisive blow past Campagnolo.

Manitta had to be alert five minutes later as Reggina substitute Francesco Cozza - against his former club - worked some space and fired in a 25-yard right-footed shot, but the Siena keeper was equal to it.
