AMSTERDAM -- AC Milan defender Oguchi Onyewu is on the verge of sealing a loan deal to play the season out with reigning Dutch champions FC Twente, MLSsoccer.com has learned from multiple sources.
In search of playing time after being frozen out by new Rossoneri boss Massimiliano Allegri, the US star will fly from Italy to the Netherlands on Friday to undergo a medical exam.
A local source told MLSsoccer.com that Twente have negotiated inclusion of a purchase option with Milan, but also that Onyewu's intention is to return for another round of his depth chart fight at San Siro at the end of the Eredivisie campaign.
Another source added that Onyewu opted to join the Tukkers over interested clubs from Germany, Italy and Switzerland due to his familiar relationship with manager Michel Preud'homme, his former boss at Standard Liège.
As of Thursday evening, Twente would not confirm a deal with Onyewu, citing a club policy that dictates they discuss new signings only after the contract ink is dry.
Twente currently stand second in the Eredivisie, four points off the top with a game in hand. They will return from the league's winter pause by hosting arch rivals Heracles Almelo on Jan. 19.
